History

History for young children is everything that has happened in the past. It is part of every aspect of life and culture.

Teaching history in an enjoyable way enriches childhood. It helps children to develop a sense of identity and to make sense of the world in which they live. Our aim is to choose features of the past that will help them to understand their world. History is also about enquiry and we introduce children to gathering, analysing and interpreting historical evidence.

We recognise that children come to school with ideas about the past. They have experience of, for example, 'old' and 'new' and their personal history and they may also have some appreciation of history in their environment or from places they have visited. We build on children's experiences to develop their historical understanding.

Aims

  • Develop an interest in the past and an appreciation of human achievements and aspirations.
  • Learn about major issues and events in the history of their own country and of the world and how those events may have influenced each other, developing a sense of time.
  • Understand how the past is different from the present and that people of other times and places may have had different values and attitudes from ours.
  • Understand the nature of historical evidence by emphasising history as a process of enquiry and by developing the range of skills required to interpret primary and secondary source materials.
  • Promote pupil’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development by developing attitudes and values such as a respect for evidence and a toleration of a range of opinions, cultures and societies.
  • Promote and develop pupil’s key skills of communication, application of number, use of ICT, working with others, problem solving, information gathering and evaluation.
